Teaching Kids Personal Hygiene Importance and Tips

Father Helping Daughter Wash Hands

Schools and daycares are reopening after the months of lockdown due to the pandemic. Personal hygiene has become crucial to protect ourselves from viruses and diseases. Parents must teach their kids the significance of personal hygiene to protect them.

Maintaining good hygiene not only prevents the diseases but also plays a role in boosting the self-esteem and confidence of your kids. Here are some tips that can help you in teaching your kids how to practice good personal hygiene.

Bath Time Routine

With the school starting after the lockdown, it is essential to maintain a bathing routine in your kids’ routine. It is necessary to teach them the right way to the bath and encourage them to wash:

  • Their nails and toenails and also clean under them
  • Their armpits
  • Their bottom and genital area
  • Their hair and face

It will help in removing any dirt and residue they might have caught throughout the day.

Washing Hands

People have realized the importance of hands washing now more than ever before. Thoroughly washing hands can prevent catching diseases. Your child must wash their hands plenty of times throughout the day. Encourage them to wash their hands for 20 seconds in the following situations:

  • After they blow their nose or sneeze
  • After using the toilet
  • When they are done playing outside
  • When they have petted or played with an animal
  • Before and after a meal

It is also vital to encourage them to wash their hands and face if someone near them had coughed or sneezed.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent diseases and dental problems. Here are a few things to follow:

  • Ensure your child brushes their teeth twice in a day
  • Help them floss the right way and make sure they do it at least once a day
  • Tell them to wash their mouth after having food, especially anything sweet
  • Using a mouthwash with fluoride is also useful in eliminating germs from the mouth

Make sure to take them to the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings.

Preventing Body Odor

As kids tend to be active throughout the day, you must teach them to take care of their body odor. Here are a few things to consider to prevent body odor:

  • Change their socks every day
  • Let the shoes dry out completely in case they get wet
  • Encourage the kids to wear clean cotton socks every time they wear closed shoes
  • Ask them to immediately change their clothes, especially underwear, after they come home from school or some other outing

Using a Sanitizer

While washing hands is the best way to remove germs, sanitizer comes in handy when we are out and about. It kills most of the bacteria to prevent health issues. Ensure your kids carry wipes and a sanitizer when they go to school or on any other trip. Encourage them to use it often when they can’t wash their hands.
